Chasing the Light
I am Michael Smith, a fine art landscape photographer based in Houston, Texas. My work is driven by a simple love for the outdoors — the quiet moments, the shifting light, and the stories nature tells when you slow down enough to listen. This November, I will be heading back to one of my favorite places to photograph: Caddo Lake.
There is something timeless about Caddo. Sitting along the Texas–Louisiana border, it feels like stepping into another world — where ancient cypress trees rise from dark, still waters, draped in silver moss that sways with the breeze. It is a place that humbles you. Every visit reminds me how small we are compared to the beauty that has been here for centuries.

Fall at Caddo is a photographer’s dream. The air turns crisp, the trees blaze in deep copper and rust tones, and soft morning light filters through layers of fog. I can already imagine the first light of day reflecting across the glassy surface — that perfect stillness that makes time feel suspended.

The light at Caddo Lake is like no other place in the world — soft, golden, and endlessly mysterious. This landscape is a dream for mystical photography, where reflections ripple across the sky and linger through long, gentle hours at sunrise and sunset. Every direction you look, the scene feels alive — moss-covered cypress trees reaching from the mist, their shapes mirrored perfectly in still water.

Misty mornings here bring a new adventure every day. Clouds and fog drift in and out of the swamp, wrapping everything in layers of atmosphere and mystery. It is that blend of light, shadow, and silence that inspires me most — a natural drama that cannot be replicated anywhere else. Through my lens, I try to capture not just what I see, but what I feel in those fleeting, sacred moments when Caddo reveals its soul.

This upcoming trip is about connections with nature, with patience, and with the craft itself. I will be exploring the hidden channels by boat, following the light, and waiting for those rare, quiet moments when everything aligns. That is when the magic happens — when the camera disappears and all that is left is the feeling.
When I return, I will be releasing a new collection of fine art prints inspired by this November journey that reflect not just what I saw, but what I felt.
If you would like to follow along, I will be sharing updates and behind-the-scenes shots from the trip on my social channels and website. And when the final series is ready, newsletter subscribers will get the first look.
Until then, here’s to early mornings, golden light, and chasing reflections across the still waters of Caddo Lake.
